The School has a wide-ranging academic portfolio of education programmes, with a well-established and long-standing reputation in Psychology, Social Sciences and Public Health Sciences. Many of our professionally accredited programmes have a vocational focus and include work experience. The School has strong established links with National Health Service Trusts and government organisations, as well as partnerships within communities at the local, national and EU level. The School has a wide range of partners in teaching, research, training and consultancy. As part of the EU SOCRATES programme, we offer our students a variety of exchange partnerships throughout Europe; and as well as partnerships with international universities, UK NHS Trusts and hospitals, the School also has strong links to the College of Osteopaths, Eastman Dental Institute, Society of Orthopaedic Medicine, Tavistock Clinic and the Royal Veterinary College. The campus is based at Enfield, which is approximately 40-45 minutes train ride from the centre of London. The campus includes excellent learning resources and facilities, including biomedical science laboratories, human performance laboratories, health skills laboratories, complementary medicine clinics and a psychophysiology laboratory.

The Quality Assurance Agency awarded Middlesex University’s School of Health & Social Sciences a particularly high rating for its Nursing and Midwifery programmes. The 2001 UK Research Assessment Exercise awarded the School ratings of ‘overall national and much international excellence’ in the subject areas of Social Policy, Social Work, Criminology, Psychoanalysis and Geography. More recently, in 2005, the Guardian League Table placed Middlesex second for Community Studies and Social Work. In addition, in the same year, Middlesex won a Centre for Excellence in Teaching & Learning (CETL) award for Mental Health and Social Work. All of our academic programmes share the distinctive Middlesex mix of critical theoretical study, policy analysis and applied work.

The School of Health & Social Sciences is partner to the London Sport Institute, which offers a range of undergraduate programmes in Sports Science. The Institute has also developed high-quality research, rapidly-developing postgraduate programmes and enhanced opportunities for MPhil/PhD study. The London Sport Institute works with outstanding partners, including University College London with which academic facilities are shared.

The key areas of research in the School are concentrated within its research centres which include the Institute of Social & Health Research, the Centre for Decision Analysis and Risk Management, the Research Centre for Transcultural Studies in Health, the Centre for Mental Health Research & Development, the Centre for Environment & Safety Management for Business, and the Interprofessional Health Studies Research Group.

This is one of the largest Computing Schools in the UK, with around 4,000 students - about 25% come from outside the EU. Eight programmes carry British Computer Society exemption – a huge endorsement to the School’s academic and professional standards. Research in the School is currently focused on issues related to human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence, information systems engineering, vision and image processing, health informatics, digital creativity, business IT, among others. Additional research activities are conducted through research groups such as ALERT: Aspects of Law & Ethics Related to Technology, Neural Networks, Computers & Society and Design For All.

The Business Development Unit engages in knowledge transfer across a wide spectrum of activities including continuing professional development, consultancy, contract research and e-learning. The rapid growth in communication technology led to the development of a Global Campus Unit at Middlesex which delivers masters programmes in IT to students at Learning Support Centres in Cyprus, Singapore, Hong Kong, Cairo and China.

Middlesex’s educational roots stretch back to the end of the 19th century when the first college opened its doors in 1878. In addition, Middlesex University won three consecutive Queen’s Anniversary Prizes between 1996 and 2000.

Our student facilities include well-appointed study-bedrooms, most with en-suite shower and wc. All rooms have internet connection. Our lively student union offers a wide range of social activities to help students make new friends and meet others from around the world. If you take your sports seriously, our qualified instructors offer top-quality coaching. Middlesex sportspeople have competed successfully at regional, national and international levels.

We provide a learning environment in which students have the widest possible choice. You can take a “single honours” programme and study your chosen subject in depth, or you can take a “joint honours” programme which allows you to combine two subjects to meet your career needs; for example, Teaching English as a Foreign Language with Education Studies, or Sports Science with Health Studies, or Psychology with Criminology. The combinations are many and varied. Even at postgraduate level, students can take Joint Masters programmes in a range of different subject areas.

Middlesex also offers extensive exchange opportunities so that students can study their chosen subject in a different cultural context, for example Traditional Chinese Medicine in Beijing, or Management in New York. For those who prefer to remain at home, our London location promises exciting opportunities for work experience and a wide range of internships. These carefully supervised placements provide insights into the workplace and allow students to graduate with an academic degree and a semester or a year’s work experience for their resume. Postgraduate students can use a summer internship as the context for an applied research dissertation – and gain from invaluable practical experience.
