The University of Reading is at the cutting edge of teaching and learning, as well as being one of the foremost research-led universities in the UK. Founded in the nineteenth century and gaining a Royal Charter in 1926, we offer a wide range of programmes from the pure and applied sciences to languages, social sciences and fine art. New subjects and programmes are regularly introduced reflecting an awareness of our changing society and academic needs. Degrees are reviewed to enable our students to develop crucial transferable skills in addition to an in-depth subject knowledge. New research and the latest thinking continually feed into undergraduate teaching, with our academic staff working at the forefront of their fields of expertise. The University offers you one of the most beautiful campuses in the UK. Set amidst 320 acres of landscaped grounds, our academic subjects and halls of residence are surrounded by green open spaces. A short distance away lie the students Union, with its shops, bars, catering outlets and entertainment, the main library, bank and study facilities. You can take a walk around Whiteknights Lake or use our first-class Wolfenden Sports Centre. They are all located here at our main Whiteknights site along with the Reading Film Theatre, our nearby Health Centre and the Chaplaincy Centre. Bulmershe Court, our second site, is about a mile away and houses the Faculty of Education & Community Studies. An additional library, Students' Union, Hall of Residence and a cafeteria supplement some excellent specialist teaching facilities.
