Founded in 1864 by Decree no 765 of 4/16 July 1864 issued by Alexandru Ioan Cuza and seceding the higher education structure initiated by the Academia Domneasca (1694), the University of Bucharest has had a major contribution to the development and modernisation of Romanian education, science and culture. The University of Bucharest, defined by its own Charter (according to the current European Union classification criteria) as a higher education and research institution, has as fundamental roles: to develop national science and culture; to preserve and disseminate the values of human culture and civilisation; to promote the spirit of free examination , of critical thought, to permanently update knowledge; to train and specialise qualified and highly qualified human resources; to contribute to the development of the Romanian society as a free state, respectful of law and democracy. The University of Bucharest accomplishes these tasks by: 1. Training experts with academic background for education, science and culture, economic and social activities. 2. Training new generations of scientific researchers adapted to the needs of contemporary science and society. 3. The University of Bucharest will contribute to the progress of knowledge, to the improvement of scientific qualification . It will assess the scientific achievements of the members of the academic community both in country and abroad. 4.The University will contribute to the creation , development, transmission and spreading of cultural values. 5. Constantly and gradually acting as a centre of promoting the international co-operation in Europe and outside it. The University of Bucharest tries to continually improve its activities, by taking into account the experience of the universities and research centres, by adapting to all viable and effective suggestions. |
